(KPL) Electricite Du Laos (EDL)signed an MoU with KEPCO,thelargeststate-ownedcompanyin the Republic of Korea on capacity building for Laos’ EDL.
The MOUwas signed at the EDL Headquarters in Vientiane Capital on Jul 18 between the Managing Director of EDL, Mr Bounoum Sivanpheng and Vice President of the KEPCO, Mr Kim Tae Ahm.
The signing was witnessed by Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Khammany Inthirath and Korea Ambassador to Lao PDR, Mr. Yun Kang Hyeon.
TheMOU will allow the two companies to implement thefirstphase of their cooperation project which will include training for EDLengineers, and theinstallation ofasubstationtrainingsystem.
Afeasibilitystudyintosubstationconversionfromoutdoorto indoortype(GasInsulationSwitchgear) willbeconductedandtheupgrade oflegacy substations willbe followed thereafter.
EDLengineersarescheduledtovisitKEPCOinSeoul,KoreatogettheadvancedsubstationautomaticsystemandthusbeabletotransferitsknowledgenationwidetofellowEDLengineers.
EDLwillbeabletoupgradeitstechnologythroughtheinstallationofthesubstationtrainingsystem,importedfromKorea.
InsupportoftheMOU,fromnowonbothcompanieswillbeabletofrequentlyexchangetechnologyknow-howandbuildanetworktoexpandtheirbusinessestoother countries in theIndochinaregionsuchasMyanmar,Vietnam,Thailand,and Cambodia.

KEPCO achievedatransmissionanddistributionlossfactorof3.6%andwasnamedthe world’s No.1electriccompanybyForbesmagazinein2016. The company recorded domestic power generationcapacityof97,649MWand overseaspower output of5,349 MW last year.
