Gov’t strives to achieve growth target

PM Nguyen Tan Dung urged inferior levels to redouble efforts to achieve the growth rate of 5.4% this year while presiding over the Government’s regular meeting on Saturday.
The expected figure is a little bit higher than that of last year but it is lower than the National Assembly’s preset target of 5.5%.
According to the Government’s latest report, the economy has been recovering quarter after quarter, from 4.76% in Q1, to 5% in Q2 and 5.54%
in Q3, and is expected to expand around 6% in the last quarter.
The consumer price index rose by 0.49 % over the previous month, led by a surge in food prices after flooding in the central region and adjustment in school fees, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported on October 24.
Viet Nam has attracted US$19.2 billion in direct foreign investment (FDI) so far this year, up 65.5% from a year earlier, according to the statistics agency.
Most FDI came to the manufacturing and processing sectors (nearly $14.9 billion), and the electricity distribution and production industry.
As many as 1,050 new projects have been licensed with a total capitalization of $13.1 billion, 79% higher than last year’s level, while the amount of additional investment was valued at $6.1 billion.
Regarding measures in the time to come, PM Dung noted that inflation is no longer a big problem now but he still warned of sudden price hikes in months ahead.
The Government chief tasked inferior levels to fruitfully implement social security and social welfare policies, fulfill the last two millennium development goals on clean water supply and HIV/AIDS prevention and fight by 2015.
Plans for assisting the central provinces hit by the recent storms need to be submitted to the Government soon, PM Dung requested.
Earlier on October 14, tropical storm Nari struck the central region, killing three people in Quang Nam province and injuring 11 others in Da Nang city. It damaged thousands of houses, uprooted a lot of trees and submerged 21 vessels.
Meanwhile, on September 30, Wutip wreaked havoc in the central province of Quang Binh after making landfall in the central region. It took the lives of two people, injured seven others and pulled down 336 houses.
Four people were injured and around 4,000 houses damaged in Quang Tri and Thu Thien-Hue provinces. Wutip also caused a mass power cut in Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces./.
