The Japanese government has agreed to provide 92,000 USD to help Roi Koi Commune in Sa Thay District (Kon Tum province) upgrade its irrigation system.
Under a contract signed on July 21 at the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi, the aid from the Japanese government will be used to purchase materials to upgrade Đak Ro Tim irrigation canal in the commune.
The canal was built in the 1990’s to water two crops a year. At present, panels alongside the canal have broken and silt has accumulated in the bed of the canal, obstructing water flow and resulting in a decrease in the efficiency of irrigation, negatively impacting agricultural production.
Addressing the signing ceremony, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Sa Thay District, Vo Van Manh, said that the assistance from the Japanese government for the poor agricultural commune of Ro Koi is of very meaningful and practical importance.
According to the official, the aid will contribute directly to increasing local agricultural production, and indirectly help reduce poverty and deforestation there.
Meanwhile, Japanese Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba said he hoped the project will help increase food production in Ro Koi commune and strengthen friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and Viet Nam.
Over the years, the Japanese government has granted aid to about 30 small-sized projects in Vietnam like the one in Kon Tum. The funds focus on the fields of health, education, and infrastructure./.
