Trade and investment ties between Vietnam and the United State (US) have experienced remarkable advancements since the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) came into effect, noted former US Trade Representative Susan Schwab.

Deputy PM, FM Pham Gia Khiem welcomes former US Trade Representative Susan Schwab, Hanoi, December 2, 2009

Ms. Susan Schwab made the statement at the meeting with Deputy PM, FM Pham Gia Khiem this morning in Hanoi.
She hailed the Vietnamese Government’s efforts in enhancing economic growth and slashing down poverty rate.
Ms. Susan Schwab, who is now a professor at the Maryland University, informed that she had discussed with leaders of the Hanoi National University on a cooperation training program on personnel management and public procurement for Vietnamese public officials.
Deputy PM Khiem hailed the guest’s contributions to the consolidation and enhancement of the bilateral trade and investment ties, saying that the Vietnam - US relationship is developing well in all aspects and at all levels.
The US is now the largest export market and the 7th biggest foreign investors in Vietnam. In 2009 alone, the US has poured US $4.2 billion in Vietnam.
If an agreement on investment protection is inked soon, the bilateral trade and investment linkages will surely bloom, asserted the Deputy PM.
He also praised for the positive change in President Barack Obama’s diplomatic policy toward ASEAN. The first US-ASEAN Summit on the sidelines of the APEC 2009 in Singapore was a vivid example of the blossoming relationship between the two sides.
He took the occasion to call on the US Government to recognize Việt Nam’s market economy status and US universities to set up their training facilities here./.
