Vietnam, the biggest investor in Laos last year, maintained its position there in the first 9 months of 2009, according to the latest statistics from the Lao Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Vietnam heavily invests in hydroelectricity in Laos

Vietnam’s businesses had the combined investment of US $1.4 billion in Laos between January and September, accounting for nearly 33% of the total foreign direct investment (FDI) in the 9-month period there.
Both Vietnamese investors and Lao partners are planning to disburse investment capital at leastUS $1 billion in 2010 and double the figure by 2015.
Laos licensed over 200 FDI projects with the total registered capital of US $4.3 billion in the first three quarters of this year, posting a year-on-year rise of nearly 39%. Most of the projects engage in mining, hydroelectricity, cash crop and garment.
