Vietnam and the Philippines on June 28 signed a fishing cooperation agreement which focuses on information exchange, fishermen support and rescue work.

The agreement lays the foundation for the two countries to carry out joint research programs and exchange information to develop aquatic resources. The two sides will found a joint working group to work out detailed plans on specific issues.
The Philippines is taking the lead in ASEAN in growing seaweed, while Vietnam has comparative advantages in raising freshwater aquatic products such as pangasius (tra and basa) fish and prawns.
The two countries have set up long-term socio-economic relations, especially within ASEAN framework./.
