The US-based First Solar Group will invest over US $1 billion in building a solar cell plant in Southeast Industrial Park in Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City.

The municipal authority on January 21 gave the investment certificate to the First Solar Group, the world’s biggest thin-film solar cell maker.
According to Mr. Tymen DeJong, the group’s Vice Chairman in charge of global production, the project’s first phase will be kicked off on January 24 with a total investment of US $300 million.
The plant’s capacity will be increased to four times in the next phase, and its total construction is expected to be finished by mid-2012, he added.
The plant will produce thin-film solar cell panels, which is considered very significance to HCM City , where the demand for energy, especially electric power is great and decisive to the city’s development./.
