Lao PM Thongsing Thammavong will lead a governmental high-ranking delegation to pay an official visit to Vietnam from Feb. 28 to March 2 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart, PM Nguyen Tan Dung.

Vietnam is the first country that Mr. Thongsing Thammavong visits after he was appointed as the new Lao PM. The move reflects the high respect and priority of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the Government and PM himself for better traditional ties and the special solidarity relationship between the two neighboring countries.
The visit will take place in the context that the socio-political situation in Laos is stable and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party holds greater leading role.
This is the right time for both Vietnam and Laos to cement and deepen the bilateral linkages.
During the visit to Vietnam, high-ranking leaders of the two countries will inform each other of the socio-economic performance in recent time and talk about measures to spur the bilateral linkages as well as regional and international issues of common concern.
The two sides have regularly conducted meetings of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-governmental Committee. The Lao Party General Secretary and State President sent a special envoy to congratulate the successful 11th National Party Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Vietnam also dispatched a special envoy to report the outcomes of the Party Congress to Laos.
Vietnam and Laos often exchanged opinion on international issues, took joint actions at ASEAN, other multilateral forums, and cooperated on the Mekong River’s water resource management and the WTO accession.
Vietnam is one of the largest investors in Laos with 252 projects worth around US $2.77 billion.
Last year, the two-way trade turnover stood at US $490 million, an increase of 17.2% against 2009./.
