Consumer price inflation (CPI) in 17-nation eurozone increased to 1.6 percent in June from 1.4 percent in May, European Union (EU) statistics office Eurostat said Monday.
This is the second month in a row that CPI has risen in the single currency area which is suffering economic recession and at the risk of deflation, according to figures released by Eurostat.
Prices of food, alcohol and tobacco products were the key factor behind the rising inflation in June, which rose by 3.3 percent year on year, according to the figures.
In June, prices of energy rose 1.6 percent on an annual basis, compared with a 0.2 percent decline registered in May, prices of services rose 1.4 percent, slightly lower than the 1.5 percent in May, and prices non-energy industrial goods increased 0.7 percent, compared with 0.8 percent increase last month. /.
