The Vietnamese Government chief was speaking on March 15 in Hà Nội at the opening ceremony of the 31st session of the FAO regional conference for Asia and the Pacific.

According to PM Dũng, developing countries, especially those in Asia and the Pacific, are facing challenges stemming from food security and poverty reduction.

It is noticeable that 60% of people in the region are suffering from hunger. A large number of countries are encountering with declining investments in the agricultural sector due to economic crisis, trade barriers and low incomes.

PM Dũng described the conference’s theme “Food security and Poverty reduction in rural areas” as practical for the global endeavors to address poverty reduction.

According to the host leader, over the last 23 years, Việt Nam has generated over 80 million tons of rice and churned out other types of agro-forestry and fishery products to contribute to ensuring food security in the world.

Việt Nam, PM Dũng said, has positively shared its experience on agricultural development with other countries, which have been appreciated by the international community.

In 2010-2020, Việt Nam will develop the agriculture sector in a modern, sustainable and manner to raise productivity, ensure national food security, boost export and raise rural people’s living standard.

To fulfill the above goals, the country is restructuring the agricultural sector, applying modern technologies and amending the agricultural land policy.

Being one of the nations worst hit by climate change and sea level rise, Việt Nam is proactively responding to the global issues while seeking support from international organizations and foreign donors to deal with these matters./.
