Germany funds Cambodia’s rural development
Germany has granted over 11.7 million EUR (roughly 15.22 million USD) to Cambodia to fund three rural development programmes in the Southeast Asian country.

The grant was inked on December 19 between the German Development Bank (GTZ) and the Cambodian Ministry of Economy and Finance in Phnom Penh, Xinhua news agency reported.

The programmes are respectively called Rural Electrification of Southern Cambodia II, Rural Infrastructure Programme in Siem Reap and Kampong Thom, and ASEAN Regional Microfinance Training Centre.

Rural Electrification of Southern Cambodia II, the third programme in the rural energy sector, follows previous projects financed by a German grant over 16 million USD on building a transmission line between Takeo and Kampot and of medium voltage transmission lines.

Rural Infrastructure Programme in Siem Reap and Kampong Thom is the fifth ones in line following German-funded investments in rural roads since 1995. Under the new programme, around 95 km rural roads including bridges and other road infrastructure in Siem Reap and Kampong Thom provinces will be upgraded.

The funds provided for ASEAN Regional Microfinance Training Centre will seek to scale up experience as well as to disseminate microfinance know-how to other microfinance institutions in Cambodia and in Asia./.
