Germany's national debt will reach 1.7 trillion euros (2.4 trillion U.S. dollars) by the end of 2009, the German government said Tuesday.
The per-capita debt for Germany's 82 million citizens will reach 20,773 euros (29.549 dollars) by the end of this year, up from 19,240 euros (27.368 dollars) in 2008, said Carl-Ludwig Thiele, an opposition liberal politician.
People born between 1980 and 2000 will be hardest hit by the 1.7-trillion-euro overdraft, according to a Hamburg Institute of International Economics study.
Germany has been seriously affected by the global economic crisis, suffering its worst recession since World War II. The country's gross domestic product was expected to contract by 6 percent this year.
