Thailand expects that its exports will surge to a double-digit figure next year as the global economy is rebounding, a senior official has said.
The Head of the Trade Promotion Department under the Thai Ministry of Trade, Rachane Potjanasuntorn, said on September 6 that the export growth would likely to surpass the latest-set target of 12-15 percent in 2010, despite the 2009 forecast of a 15 percent drop in the country’s exports.
The bright prospect is attributed to numerous steps taken by the Thai Government such as increasing the export ratio of foods and farm produce to between 17 and 19 percent, upgrading the transport system to reduce costs, expanding shares in new markets, and cashing in on benefits brought in by the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
Several obstacles, including global oil price surges, stronger value of the Bath and political unrests, continue looming over Thailand ’s exports, according to Rachane.
He, however, remained optimistic about the rebounding of the country’s exports to pre-economic crisis level once Thailand succeeds in its export promotion strategies./.
