Firms pressed to invest in Laos
Vietnamese Party and State encouraged enterprises to invest in Laos and asked them to maintain prestige with their Laos counterparts, President Nguyen Minh Triet said yesterday at a meeting with Deputy Chairwoman of Lao National Assembly Pany Yathotu.

Investors often took into account economic efficiency of investment projects, but when investing in Laos, Vietnamese enterprises must take into consideration the countries’ friendship and mutual support for development.
Pany affirmed that on a firm foundation of good political relationship, co-operation between Laos and Viet Nam in economics, trade and investment had also been developed efficiently.
Viet Nam’s investment in Laos had helped improved Lao people’s lives and contributed to the country’s GDP growth while Viet Nam’s support of Laos development also had a politic significance, Pany said.
Welcoming Pany’s seven-day visit, which was made at the invitation of Vietnamese counterpart Tong Thi Phong, Triet affirmed that the Vietnamese Party, State and people were determined to preserve and foster the traditional friendship with the Lao Party, State and people.
Vietnamese people appreciated the achievements of the Lao people under the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party in their national construction and development in order to lift Laos’s prestige and position in the international arena, Triet said.
Pany’s visit was an occasion for the two countries’ National Assemblies to exchange experiences in bilateral co-operation and to tighten the friendship between the two peoples, he said.
The same day, Pany was also received by Vietnamese National Assembly chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.
Pany thanked Viet Nam’s National Assembly for its practical and efficient support to its Laos counterpart, especially in human resource training, working facility and equipment improvement.
He highlighted the important role of the two assemblies in boosting the two countries’ relationship and particularly in accelerating economic, trade and investment co-operation.
Trong said he highly valued results of the dialogue between the two Assembly delegations and affirmed that the deep relationship between the two nations was an invaluable asset and a power source for the development of the two sides.
Maintaining and developing the relationship was the responsibility of both nations, Trong said, adding that the two sides should support each other and develop the relationship more comprehensively with more practical efficiency.
They should create more favourable conditions for businesses from the two sides to co-operate and invest, as well as join hands more closely in improving quality and speeding up the progress of the two countries’ co-operative projects, Trong said.
Viet Nam and Laos should have more new initiatives to exchange experiences in legislating, supervising and making decisions on important issues of the two countries, he said.
Trong wished that the two assemblies would further co-operate in regional and international inter-parliarmentary forums, especially in the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, and hoped that Laos would actively support Viet Nam’s National Assembly in completing its role as the AIPA-31 chair in the 2009-10 term.
Pany also had meetings with Vietnamese counterpart Tong Thi Phong and Viet Nam Women Union chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa.
