The consensus was reached during the meeting between Deputy PM, FM Pham Gia Khiem and Uruguayan FM Luis Almagro in Hanoi this afternoon.
Minister Luis Almagro is on his visit to Vietnam to attend the High-level Tripartite Conference on the UN's Delivering as One Initiative, which takes place in Hanoi on June 14-17.
Deputy PM Khiêm reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy to develop close ties with Latin American countries, including Uruguay.
He said that the two countries have various potentials, noticeably in such fields of husbandry, agriculture-forestry, bio-technology, culture and sports.
Mr. Luis Almagro said that his country treasure the UN Conference here as it provides a good chance for Uruguay to deeply engage in the UN’s activities as well as to cement ties with Vietnam which is gaining rising prestige and role in the international arena.
Both Vietnam and Uruguay are among the 8 countries to pilot the One UN Initiative.
The Latin American country plans to open its Consulate in Hanoi tomorrow. Minister Luis Almagro believed that the bilateral relations would advance strongly in the time to come thanks to the two sides’ efforts.
On the same day, Minister Luis Almagro and Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Van Phong signed a cooperation agreement between the two Governments.
He also had separate meetings with Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Danh Vinh and Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Đoàn Duy Khương to exchange ways to expand economic, trade and scientific linkages.
Vietnam and Uruguay signed a framework agreement on cooperation and a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs during President Tabaré Vázquez’s visit to Vietnam in 2007.
The agreement on visa exemption for Vietnamese and Uruguayan diplomatic and public passport holders came into effect since June 2007./.
