Vietnam demands EU to end anti-dumping duty
Vietnam requests the European Commission (EC) to lift the anti-dumping duty on made-in-Vietnam bicycles as the tax will expire on July 15.

Many Vietnamese bicycle manufactures and workers have been severely suffering from the EC’s decision on anti-dumping duty

Vietnamese agencies and representatives in Europe, especially in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy, have met with the European Trade Commission, the European Bicycle Manufacturers Association (EBMA), and local bicycle associations to campaign for the removal.
According to the Vietnamese agencies and representatives, the EC’s decision to impose anti-dumping duty on Vietnamese bicycles is biased, unfair and not appropriate to the legal regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the growing bilateral trade and economic ties between Vietnam and Europe. In addition, the duty has caused severe economic and social impacts on Vietnamese bike manufactures and workers.
As a result, Vietnam requests the EC to abrogate the anti-dumping tax right after its expiry on July 15 and not to conduct a final review on the product.
It is reported that the number of made-in-Vietnam bikes exported to the EU has dropped by 50 times from over 1 million in 2005 to only 21,421 in 2009. Quite a few Vietnamese bicycle manufactures have gone bankrupt or quit their production. Particularly, the amount of workers involved in the industry has dramatically declined from 210,000 in 2005 to only 5,000 at the beginning of this year./.
