British unemployment rate dropped to 6.0 percent in the three months to August 2014, down from 6.1 percent in the three months to July, and recording the lowest level since late 2008, showed data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Wednesday.
The unemployment rate was slightly lower than the market estimation consensus of 6.1 percent.
There were 1.97 million unemployed people in the three months to August, down 154,000 from the previous quarter and 538,000 fewer than a year earlier, the figures showed.
The employment rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for the period from June to August was 73.0 percent, 0.1 percentage point higher than that in period from March to May 2014. There were 30.76 million people in employment aged 16 and over, 46,000 more than for March to May 2014 and 736,000 more than a year earlier, said the statistics department of the government.
Claims for unemployment benefit, however, fell by 18,600 to totally 951,900 in Sept. from the previous month. Compared with a year earlier, it was down by 394,500 said ONS.
Meanwhile, in the same period, British employees' total pay was merely 0.7 percent higher than a year earlier. Pay excluding bonuses for employees was 0.9 percent higher, data also showed./.
