VGP – A seminar titled "Việt Nam-APEC: Ten years of cooperation for the development of the Asia-Pacific region" was held today to predict APEC prospects and outline orientations for Việt Nam’s participation in the future.
According to Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm, the most noteworthy achievement gained by Việt Nam during ten years as an APEC member was that the country has played an important role on a forum of many economic powers, including the US, Russia, Japan, and China. Through this, Việt Nam has effectively multilateralized and diversified its international relations, so as to maintain its sustainable growth and peaceful ties in the region.
Through APEC, Việt Nam has many chances to promote bilateral cooperation with other partners in the region, said the Deputy PM.
Since 2003, due to the outburst of SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome), APEC has expanded its non-economic fields of cooperation, especially counter-terrorism, health security, natural calamity prevention, education, human resource development, anti-corruption, energy and food security, and climate change. Việt Nam considers the cooperation within APEC an important part in its open diplomatic policies. It plans to closely combine multilateral and bilateral activities, make full use of multilateral cooperation to boost up bilateral ties with other economies in and out of APEC.
At the seminar, many agreed that Vietnamese enterprises should proactively take part in activities of the regional business community in order to expand cooperation and protect the country’s legitimate interests.
