Canada 's bilateral merchandise trade with Vietnam has increased steadily over the past decade, standing more than four times greater than in 2000.
According to Audri Mukhopadhyay, Consul General of Canada in Ho Chi MinhCity , bilateral trade reached an all-time high of nearly 1.4 billion USD in 2010.
Merchandise imports from Vietnam were valued at 1.2 billion USD, while exports were worth 264.7 million USD.
According to Canadian statistics, the stock of Canadian direct investment in Vietnam was 89 million USD at the end of 2009.
Canada and Vietnam are currently in negotiations toward a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA).
The Consulate General of Canada organises various trade promotion events which include trade delegations to Canada , incoming delegations to Vietnam , food promotion events, education fairs, seminars and various other activities in an effort to increase further cooperation between the two countries.
In addition, the consulate carries out a public affairs programme to raise awareness on Canada 's positive images among the local community. One of these activities is to support the Canadian community in organising the annual Terry Fox Run inHo Chi MinhCity.
On Sept. 28, the consulate held a ceremony to donate 71,000 USD to purchase an ultrasound machine for the Oncology Hospital . The funds were raised from the Terry Fox Run 2010, with the participation of more than 9,200 people./.
