Dung Quất ready for the first batch of "Made-in-Việt Nam" oil products
After 44 months of construction, the Dung Quất Oil Refinery will be officially inaugurated on Sunday, three days ahead of schedule. The event, highlighting the Party and State’s strategy on national energy security, will mark an important milestone in the country’s industrialization and modernization.

The construction of the first oil refinery of Vietnam was started in 2005 by Technip and PetroVietnam.

Dung Quất Oil Refinery is located in Bình Sơn District of the central province of Quảng Ngãi, covering an area of 338 ha (land) and 471 (sea). With the total investment capital of US $2.5 billion, it is now the most modern plant of the same kind in Asia.

With the latest technological standards, the refinery will produce high-quality petroleum products which can meet the demands at domestic and international markets.

A State Steering Committee was founded, headed by PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng, to monitor and direct the implementation of the project.

Technip, the contractor in charge of designing and purchasing materials and equipment, established four operation centers in Paris (France), Yokohama (Japan), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Madrid (Spain), recruiting 1,000 experts.

At the construction site, the project some times required a labor force of 15,000 technicians, engineers, experts and workers from 30 different countries. About 120,000 tons of materials and equipment, over 5 million meters of electric cable and nearly 17,000 tons of steel were used.

The plant will operate with 60% of its design capacity during the initial stage until September. This year, it is expected to provide 2.7 million tons of products.

A lever for economic potentialities

The construction of the oil refinery has stimulate investment in the Dung Quất Economic Zone (EZ).

After the plant’s groundbreaking ceremony, the EZ drew 43 investment projects worth of VND 91,699 billion in 2006 only. Earlier, it received 52 projects and VND 32,410 during the period of 2001-2005.

The figures increased year after year, 126 projects and VND 139,106 billion in 2007, and 157 projects last year.

Quảng Ngãi made a great leap from the 37th position to rank itself in the top-five biggest FDI suckers of Vietnam. Statistics show that its FDI increase reaches 56.29% per year.

An economic region is taking shape and flourishing around this national key project.

The inauguration of the Dung Quất Oil Refinery is expected to be a driving force for Quảng Ngãi’s socio-economic development and important lever to lift up the central part and the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
