After a government decision to initially invest about 1.57 trillion baht (roughly 44.3 billion USD) in a second round stimulus package, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Mar. 29 that he is confident the Thai economy should improve late this year.
If the country’s economy does not deteriorate in the next four or five months, the government would focus on boosting economy by injecting new investment in every sector, including water resources, which will benefit more than one million households, PM Abhisit was quoted by the Thai news agency as saying.
In his weekly TV address, Abhisit said the country’s economic ministers last week approved the second round government economic stimulus programme.
"Our idea may be different from previous governments as we don’t focus on major projects but on those which are ready for implementation. They may be small- or medium-sized projects which are spread out in every region,” he said.
The new investment will be made in fundamental infrastructure projects, including dual railway tracks, creating value-added tourism, culture and human development, especially in education and public health.
Initially, some 500 health stations throughout the country will be upgraded this year to hospitals, the PM added./.
