In their meetings and talks in Hanoi on Thursday, top leaders of Vietnam and Laos expressed their pleasure at the good relationship between the two countries and agreed to place it on a new plane in the time to come.

At the invitations of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s (CPV) General Secretary Nong Đuc Manh and State President Nguyen Minh Triet, Mr. Choummaly Sayason,General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), State President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LRDR) started his official visit to Vietnam.
On his first day in Hanoi, he held talks with CPV chief Nong Đuc Manh and had a meeting with PM Nguyen Tan Dzung.
The host Party and Government leaders stressed the significance of the guest’s visit, believing that it will make the Vietnam-Laos relationship further develop in line with the two peoples’ desire.
They also confirmed the strategic role of the comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in guaranteeing independence, political stability, socio-economic development and raising the international position of each country.

Both the Vietnamese and Lao leaders agreed on orientations and measures to consolidate the political relations, maintain regular high-ranking meetings, share theoretical and practical experience of party renovation and building, jointly compile the history book on the Vietnam-Laos special relationship, promote security and defense cooperation.
They acknowledged that in 2008, Vietnamwas the biggest investor in Laos, with many effective projects on hydroelectricity, transport, industrial crop planting, and mining.
The two sides agreed to expand and facilitate cooperation among ministries, localities and enterprises.
They vowed to build a Vietnam-Laos borderline of peace and friendship for cooperation and sustainable development.
The leaders pledged to closely work together in outlining the strategy on Vietnam-Laos cooperation in the period of 2011-2020 and coping with international and regional issues as well as in activities on multilateral forums.

Vietnam will assist Laos to successfully host the 25th SEA Games and share experience of international economic integration.
The same day, Vietnamese and Lao party leaders witnessed the signing of some cooperation agreements on transport, aviation, food safety, animal and plant quarantine, and salt exploitation.
