The UN Sustainable Development Committee opens its 18th meeting

At the UN Headquarters in New York, State President Nguyen Minh Triet on September 21attended the round-table meeting on promoting sustainable development, one of the 6 sessions of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Summit.
Sharing concern of the international community about climate change, including changes in water sources, the Vietnamese President proposed countries and international organizations have strategies to tap and use water resources in a sound, effective and sustainable manner because that is an issue vital to social security and stability of regions.
Vietnam will well coordinate with countries in the Mekong Delta to exploit the river effectively for the benefit of people and sustainable development, stated Mr. Triet.
He said that economic development is not only proved in macro-economic stability and high growth rates but also ensured economic security, enhanced growth quality, and investment effectiveness.
Economic development should be harmonized with social justice, poverty reduction, energy-saving modes of production, and combating natural disasters and climate change, the Vietnamese leader concluded.
